Ankle-Deep

Excuse me if I become a bit fiery, but I get annoyed when people (including myself) don't live up to their full potential as sentient human beings.

Today on the tv, children in Texas
trying to learn about the environment
understand the global community
I say take that and shove it
Don't find an excuse for your useless life
Don't latch unto those morals, ideas
you believe give you meaning
Everyday one of you, rushing from place to place
searching for his Jesus, searching for
his Buddha, his Muhammad, his Shiva
dancing (or is it writhing) in the flames
Good God, you make me sick, all of you
Verily, Verily, I say unto you, each of you have your reward
Where is the light found in you little lambs?
When do you become roaring lions?
or are you still children?
learning about the environment? the global community?
a gesture rather than a commitment?
ankle-deep instead of swimming?
knee-deep, when you should be diving?
you are neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm
behold I will spit you out!
Make yourself useful
Make yourself meaningful
do you know what that means?
be ye emersed, not waist-deep
stop doing what is convenient
By God, stop being complacent
throwing your weight around
getting in the way of others
Do something, do not sit and stare, chatting and giggling
Be something, something beyond what you are
Be a devil, be a saint, be a madman
be an avatar, but by God, be something!
Something more than a bag of hot air
a receptacle for other people's ideas,
Commit yourself to this something, your something
this new somebody, beyond the recycled dogmas of long-gone someones
Venture out. Leave your comfort zone.
There you can not grow, you can only be stifled, constricted,
confined to gestures, fake emotions, fake actions,
shadows of true actions, true undertakings
Life is not a gesture, a fad, only ankle-deep
In life, you go deep
